Family Dynamic

Reflect on changes in your family dynamic since quarantine started. College students are home, parents are working from home, etc. What has it been like?

  1. For my family, it has been the first time that everyone has been under the same roof again for an extended period of time in what feels like forever. All of my siblings and I are doing online school and my parents are both working from home now. It's almost feels weird to have everyone at the dinner table again all at the same time. My parents even said sometimes they forget that everyone is home, and it's weird to have to make dinner for everyone again. It's a little crazy and hectic having everyone home, but I have really enjoyed it. We have been able to do a lot of things together that we haven't been able to do in awhile, and that's been really nice. For example, yesterday the weather was super nice, and my siblings and I all went outside to kick a ball around and play with the dog. During weekdays though, everyone is kind of just in their room and doing schoolwork or their job. It's not until later in the afternoon that we can actually do things together. I wish that there was more to do, but most of the time we have just been watching shows or movies together. That's been nice, as I have started some new shows that I didn't think I would like at first but do now. At the same time, it gets boring at times.

    1. Everyone being home is definitely a change. In my house, I keep thinking like wow it's so weird how now this isn't really a normal thing, but growing up we were all always together and stuff. At times it feels almost crammed, so it has definitely been nice to get outside with the weather being pretty nice lately! It does kind of stick that there really isn't much to do though. I get bored at times too, so I understand that feeling!

  2. I know there have been a lot of negatives to having to be stuck at home all day, but focus on the negatives won’t make anything better so I’ve chosen to see this as an opportunity. This is a chance for me to really appreciate my family and get to spend quality time with them that i probably wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. How often is your whole family at home? Not very, so I’m taking thing time to spend it with my family and make memories. It can be crazy and chaos with everyone home, but that’s what’s great about it. Instead of being stuck at school 8 hours a day, bored out of my mind, I have my family around to keep things interesting and to make me smile when I’m stressed about school. So I would say that this whole thing has just brought us closer together and more appreciative of one another.

    1. I agree! I have really enjoyed spending this time with my family. If this wouldn't have happened, I wouldn't have seen them nearly as much because I would have been away at college. One of my favorite things about this time is that we get to eat dinner together almost every night. My dad makes amazing home cooked meals, which I also wouldn't have been able to enjoy at college. It's always nice to look at the positives during this time.

  3. My family dynamic really hasn't changed all that much. Everyone is home, but it almost doesn't really feel like that. Most of my family has just been sticking to themselves, and it's like a miracle if you see some of them come out of their room for more than just dinner. My siblings are in college, so I they probably have a lot of school work to be doing, but I only have 1-2 hours every day. After that, I usually just go outside or watch Netflix for the rest of the day because everyone else is so busy. Hopefully that will change soon though because my siblings are supposed to be done with school soon.
I keep wanting to hang out with my grandparents because that is something that I typically do on a regular basis. However, my parents always say that that is not a good idea because they obviously don't want them getting sick. I feel like they are probably pretty lonely. They are used to us visiting more often, and now all we do is buy their groceries for them and drop them off at the door.
